Anxiety is a normal response to stressful situations. When you encounter a situation that makes you scared or nervous, your body will react to alert you to what it perceives as danger. Even when the situation isn’t dangerous, your body will try to get you ready for it. Anxiety can actually help you to be better equipped for stressful situations. When you are anxious, you are more likely to pay attention and work out a solution until the situation is resolved.

Even though anxiety can be helpful, anxiety symptoms can be uncomfortable and even painful. Anxiety symptoms such as a racing heart or shakiness are a sign of immediate stress. You may sweat or feel short of breath. Headaches, stomach pain, or even diarrhea are common physical anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety symptoms can have an effect on your emotions as well. You may feel scared or apprehensive, and you may feel jumpy. Trouble concentrating and irritability are also common anxiety symptoms. If you are anxious for a long time about a situation, you may even have a hard time sleeping. You might feel tired from the physical responses your body is experiencing.

Anxiety is normal, but persistent anxiety symptoms could be a sign of a more serious problem. Some symptoms of anxiety could be a sign of a more serious condition that needs medical treatment. If you are constantly feeling worried, anxious, or changing your daily routine to avoid situations that cause anxiety, you should talk to your doctor about a possible anxiety disorder.
