Depression symptoms
Life can get anyone down. No matter how hard you try to keep a good attitude, stress, finances, or family problems can build up. When stress in your life builds up, it can make you feel sad or overwhelmed. Those feelings are a normal way of dealing with the events in your life. After a time, most people begin to feel better after a short time.
Most people refer to this short term feeling of the blues as being “depressed”. Depression is actually much more serious than this. Depression can affect everyone differently, but its main characteristic is that it is persistent, and interferes with your daily life. When someone is depressed, they may feel a variety of physical and emotional symptoms that make them withdraw from daily life.
Feeling bleak or hopeless for a long period of time is a depression symptom. You may also feel sad, helpless, or empty. These depression symptoms can make you lose interest in friends, family, or activities you used to enjoy. Emotional depression symptoms can make you feel unmotivated, or guilty. Self loathing or being too hard on yourself may be another depression symptom. No matter how hard you try, it may be difficult to control negative thoughts, but this is a depression symptom as well.
Depression symptoms can be physical too. Many people who experience depression think these symptoms are all in their head, but they can be very real. Depression symptoms such as aches and pains or restlessness and irritability can make it difficult to get motivated. In addition to these physical depression symptoms, you may have a hard time sleeping, or sleep too much. Eating habits can change, such as eating all the time, or losing your appetite.
Depression symptoms can push family and friends away, and cause you to avoid even small tasks. It may feel exhausting and frustrating to attempt even normal daily tasks. Lack of concentration and loss of energy are common depression symptoms.
The most serious depression symptom is thoughts of suicide. Talking of death, giving away possessions as if tying up loose ends, and saying goodbye are serious signs of suicidal thoughts. Extreme hopelessness and reckless behavior may be depression symptoms that require medical attention right away. Anytime someone exhibits these depression symptoms, it should be taken seriously.
Depression symptoms can change the way you live your life, and make you feel like you are lost, or never happy. Medical treatment is effective for depression symptoms, so there’s no reason to let it take over your life. When life gets you down for a few days, there’s probably no reason to worry, but when your life feels out of control and hopeless, depression symptoms may be to blame. Talking to your doctor about your depression symptoms may help you get control of your life back.
