Panic Attack
Some medical conditions are painful and alarming. Everyone knows the symptoms of a heart attack, shortness of breath, dizziness, sweats or chills, and chest pain. Heart attacks are a serious medical problem, so when you experience those symptoms, it is scary. Seeking medical attention immediately is crucial when you feel like you are having a heart attack, but those all of those symptoms can also be caused by another condition.
A panic attack mimics all of the symptoms of a heart attack. A panic attack can occur anytime or anywhere, with or without a cause. When you’re having a panic attack you may feel weak, shaky, out of breath, and even have chest pain. With a panic attack, you might feel overwhelmed, or you might be afraid you’re going to die. Unlike heart attacks, a panic attack is physically harmless, but emotionally, it might be terrifying.
When you experience a panic attack, the symptoms are sudden and overwhelming. If you suffer from a panic attack in a shopping mall or while you are driving, you may feel like you need to avoid those places or activities in the future to avoid a panic attack. Some people experience a panic attack every time they are faced with a situation or setting, and some for no explainable reason at all.
Panic attacks are treatable with relaxation techniques, or for more extreme cases, medication and therapy. When you begin to fear a panic attack, or when they interfere with your daily life, you should consult a doctor about possible treatments, and to rule out other possible medical causes. Discuss the physical and emotional signs you feel when you experience a panic attack, and let them know the extent they interfere with your daily activities. Your doctor may perform x-rays, MRI, and other tests before diagnosing your panic attack.
Once medical issues have been ruled out, your doctor will want to know the frequency and intensity when you have a panic attack. Frequent or intense panic attacks could be a sign of panic disorder. Your doctor will help you find the best treatment, and teach you ways to alleviate symptoms in the middle of a panic attack.
Having a panic attack can feel like you’re dying. That’s why it’s important to seek medical attention to determine the true cause of your symptoms. A panic attack can occur anywhere, but knowing what they mean and how to deal with them can give you the upper hand.
